Abstract
Various vascular anomalies of the internal carotid arteries (ICAs) may occasionally arise in the sellar and parasellar region and warrant attention from treating physicians.
Dolichoectasia is a term used to describe dilatation, elongation, and tortuosity of cerebral arteries. It most commonly affects the vertebrobasilar system, but it may also occur in unilateral or bilateral ICAs.
Dolichoectasia is commonly associated with hypertension and may be associated with polycystic kidney disease.
In rare cases, ectasia of the ICA may result in compression of the optic nerve, chiasm, or both, with corresponding visual loss. The median age of patients with this condition is 72 years.
