Vascular Fistulas of the Sellar and Parasellar Region

  • Chapter
Atlas of Sellar and Parasellar Lesions

Abstract

Primary arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) of the pituitary gland and sellar region are exceedingly rare.

More commonly, vascular malformations in surrounding structures (such as the cavernous sinus) have a secondary effect on the pituitary gland and its physiology.

The most common of these conditions are cavernous-carotid fistulas (CCFs) and dural arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) of the cavernous sinus.

The Barrow classification system is often used to categorize these lesions. Classic, direct CCFs are Type A, and Types B through D are collectively called “indirect fistulas” or “dural AVMs.”

Type A fistulas are direct, high-flow CCFs between the ICA and cavernous sinus.
