Fibrosarcoma of the Sellar Region

  • Chapter
Atlas of Sellar and Parasellar Lesions

Abstract

Malignant mesenchymal tumors rarely arise in the sellar region. Most of them are either spread of a primary skull base lesion or are secondary to radiation therapy for a pituitary adenoma.

The most common primary sarcoma of the sellar region is the chondrosarcoma, followed by fibrosarcoma and rhabdomyosarcoma, each with a few case reports. Postradiation fibrosarcomas are the most common of these malignant neoplasms.

Pituitary fibrosarcoma is a rare cancer that is often associated with prior radiation exposure or therapy.

Secondary pituitary fibrosarcomas commonly develop 10–15 years after treatment for a separate tumor, often a pituitary adenoma.
