Abstract

The use of innovative extraction techniques such as ultrasound, microwave, instant controlled pressure drop, supercritical fluid, pulsed electric fields, mechanical pressing, agro-solvent and enzyme assisted extraction (TableĀ 4.1) allows total recovery of lipids from microorganisms and also reduced extraction time, energy consumed, and less solvent. Conventional techniques are limited by the diffusion of solvent into biomass, due to rigid structure of cell walls of microorganisms.
