Abstract
A 55-year-old male with a history of alcohol abuse and liver cirrhosis presents to the emergency department with upper gastrointestinal bleeding and symptomatic anemia related to acute blood loss (hemoglobin, Hgb level 7.1 g/dL). A type and crossmatch sample (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, EDTA anticoagulant) is submitted to the blood bank.
