Abstract

A 53-year-old male with a history of coronary artery disease, hypertension, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and chronic anemia, presents with gangrenous left foot and is scheduled for amputation. The patient was transfused red blood cells (RBCs) at the hospital 3 years ago and most recently 6 months ago; the antibody screen was negative at those times. A type and screen sample (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, EDTA anticoagulant) is submitted to the blood bank.
