Abstract

This chapter describes the history of the Institute of Control Sciences, including the arrival of V.N. Vapnik and A.Ya. Chervonenkis at the Institute and the main directions of their work against the background of everyday life of the Institute, and the beginning of the Institute’s studies in the field of pattern recognition. It also provides a brief summary of VC theory in machine learning. Personal observations of the author accompany the story.
