Abstract

Complications of sinusitis arise mostly as a result of the sinuses being separated from key organ structures only by relatively thin pieces of bone. As a result, there is always the potential for the disease to spread from the sinuses into the orbital space, and intracranially.

This chapter explores both the extracranial and intracranial manifestations of extension of disease beyond the sinuses. Within each of these areas, we will discuss the pathophysiology, diagnosis, and the medical and surgical management of these complications.

Because of the unique aspects in presentation and management of allergic fungal disease, we end with a separate section on this disease entity.
