Abstract
Vascular access procedures play an important role in pediatric surgical practice. Different clinical situations require different vascular access types including central venous, peripheral venous, and peripheral arterial access. In this chapter, we outline the core technical principles of ultrasound-guided vascular access, with particular focus on equipment selection, patient setup, anatomic landmarks, and key techniques. We describe the use of transverse and in-line transducer orientations and suggest clinical scenarios for the use of each. Finally, we describe a lateral approach technique of tunneled internal jugular venous line placement as well as keys to successfully addressing common difficult access scenarios.
