Abstract

This case addresses an initiative that looks harmless and innocuous on the surface but is resisted voraciously by an older segment of the faculty. The scenario contrasts approaches which are either/or with those which are both/and. It also illustrates the staying power of village elders and the havoc they can wreak in a situation in which they just refuse to participate. It also emphasizes the mistakes that are made when one assumes that top-down strategies, done alone, are effective.
