Dr. Worksalot: Personality and Getting Started

  • Chapter
Learning to Lead in the Academic Medical Center

Abstract

This case is about personality traits that derail performance and the strategy of compensating for them. It demonstrates that the skills that are required to get promoted are different from the skills required for leadership and personality quirks that are relatively innocent in one situation can become derailing in another. It shows that a candidate’s success depends on the ability to make the transition from individual contributor to a builder of organizations and an ability to develop the psychological capacity to enjoy and encourage others’ success.
