Backstories of Medical Writers and Writing

Abstract

This chapter presents a treasury of stories about writers, both medical and nonmedical, and about the works they produced: the first medical writer, the first medical book printed, and what one writer considers the most-important-ever article in the New England Journal of Medicine. Here are tales of physicians and scientists, such as Joseph Goldberger and Barry Marshall, who engaged in self-experimentation, and wrote about what they found. Also, there are the stories of famously rejected writers, medical writers whose health problems may have influenced their work, medical writers who penned books on religious topics, and pseudonyms used by medical writers.
