Abstract
The author’s passion for space was stoked by Apollo 11’s landing on the Moon and Robert Heinlein’s science fiction, but family and society provided little encouragement for reaching her dream of becoming a scientist despite being identified as gifted. Participation in the 1970s Jesus People movement helped overcome struggles with her parents’ divorce. Lack of money for college led to a transfer from Ohio University to UNC-Greensboro where she was the only woman in the Physics Department. After graduation cum laude, Dyson served as a Congressional intern in Washington, D.C. for Ralph Regula (R-OH) in 1977.
