Materials for Injection Laryngoplasty: Current Application

  • Chapter
Injection Laryngoplasty

Abstract

Injection laryngoplasty is an endoscopic or transcutaneous surgical procedure that uses injectable materials, either organic or synthetic, and is designed to improve or restore glottic or neoglottic competence by increasing the volume and/or by medializing the anatomical structures at the site of the injection. One of the most problematic aspects, however, remains the type of material used. The best features for achieving the optimal functional results should be: biocompatible, inert and does not cause local tissue reaction or fibrosis; easy to prepare and easy to use; readily available, easy to measure in quantity, easy to inject through a small needle; cheap; durable, and resistant to resorption or migration; able to maintain the visco-elasticity of the vocal cord post-injection. The materials used nowadays are considered in details: the hyaluronic acid between the absorbable injectable materials; the autologous fat and the calcium hydroxylapatite (Radiesse®) between the slowly/partially absorbable injectable material; the Polydimethylsiloxane (Vox-Implants®) between the not absorbable injectable materials.
