Abstract
Subcutaneous drains are used to prevent seromas in many plastic surgery procedures including abdominoplasties, but they are not tolerated well by patients and cause discomfort during the recovery period. Combined lipoabdominoplasty without extensive abdominal flap undermining creates a surgical field that eliminates the need for drains without increasing seroma rates. The specifics of the technique include discontinuous undermining of the anterior abdomen with liposuction, limited direct undermining in the midline, preservation of a thin layer of fibrofatty tissue on the superficial abdominal wall fascia, and surgical site compression with properly fitted compression garments for at least 2 weeks after surgery.
