Abstract

Light induced drift (LID) is briefly described. It is caused by outflowing photons but through an excitation process rather than through momentum exchange. Its efficiency is compared to that of atomic diffusion. It is shown that in realistic astrophysical situations, diffusion driven by radiative acceleration is expected to dominate. A more precise determination of the role of LID requires a better knowledge of the rates of excitation of ions by protons.

Notes

  1. 1.

See § 3 of LeBlanc and Michaud (1993).

  2. 2.

From Eqs. (22) and (23) of LeBlanc and Michaud (1993). We use a notation consistent with that of § 3.4.2 but slightly different from theirs.

  3. 3.

A useful discussion of collision frequencies is found in § 5.3 of Spitzer (1962).

  4. 4.

See § 3 of LeBlanc and Michaud (1993).

  5. 5.

See Fig. 4 of LeBlanc and Michaud (1993) and the accompanying discussion.

  6. 6.
