Abstract
VAAFT (Video-Assisted Anal Fistula Treatment) is an innovative technique based on a new concept to treat anal fistulas. The main characteristics are the endoluminal approach and the direct vision. This new approach makes preoperative diagnostic workup and classification of the fistula unnecessary. A dedicated fistuloscope allows exploration of the fistula in order to identify not only the main tract but also any possible secondary tracts or abscess cavities. It also allows the precise location of the internal opening and the destruction of the fistula from the inside. Finally, VAAFT ends with the closure of the internal opening. This approach respects anal sphincter integrity. So, VAAFT introduces the new concept of “fistuloscopy.”
