Abstract
Due to the widespread use of abdominal imaging, pancreatic cystic lesions (PCLs) have been detected with increased frequency. While a significant number of the PCLs are found incidentally, mucinous cystic lesions of the pancreas are lesions with variable malignant potential. Cross-sectional imaging, endoscopic ultrasound with or without fine-needle aspiration, cyst fluid cytology, and tumor markers are valuable diagnostic modalities during workup of these lesions. The management of PCLs needs to take into account the risks of malignant transformation and the patient’s overall health. As clinicians gain further understanding of the natural history of various PCLs, the optimal management and surveillance strategy will continue to evolve.
