Abstract
Recent years have witnessed major advances in the area of noninvasive multimodality imaging of the heart. The fusion of coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) with myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI), either with single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) or positron emission tomography (PET), allows a combined assessment of anatomical and functional aspects of cardiac diseases. This method is now established as a diagnostic work-up tool mainly in patients with known or suspected coronary artery disease (CAD), permitting comprehensive evaluation of coronary anatomy, myocardial perfusion, and coronary calcification and viability in one examination. Especially the wider availability of dedicated hybrid scanner systems and the release of specific image fusion software, preventing time consuming examinations and allowing a simple patient workflow for hybrid studies, have further increased the use of this technique. The radiation burden of a combined imaging study remains an important concern. However, the introduction of new dedicated devices and low-dose image acquisition protocols has resulted in considerable reductions in radiation exposure for hybrid studies.
