Abstract
Nanotechnology is omnipresent in photovoltaics. Here we illustrate with a particular technological example how an industrial sector can be created, starting from nanoscale objects and ending up with installations covering hectares of solar panels. These are solar farms, designed to generate large amounts of electricity in the multi-megawatt installations. The example chosen here is the sector known as concentrated photovoltaics (CPV).

Notes
- 1.
The band gap of the semiconductor and photon energy above which it will absorb light.
- 2.
A p-n junction consists of two layers of a semiconductor material, one doped to give positve charges (p) and the other doped to give negative charges (n) (see Sect. 2.5).
