Abstract

Essential oils are a mixture of natural compounds extracted from aromatic plants that have long been used for their many applications including analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and antitumor activities. These oils are composed of volatile compounds, such as monoterpenes, which have shown several biological activities including strong antitumor effects. The monoterpenes have been used as bioactive natural products in vitro and in vivo against several tumors, for example, in breast, brain, colon, and lung tumors. The molecular mechanisms that underlie their pharmacological effects have been proposed. In this chapter, we present the current and emerging cancer molecular targets affected by monoterpenes found in essential oils, the pathways activated by them, and the physicochemical properties that contribute to their potential to treat tumors.
