Loss and Value

Abstract

Many argue that our value systems are heavily influenced by the certainty of ultimate death. It has thus been suggested that eliminating death will eliminate our value systems as we know them. This may be true, but eliminating physical death will not necessarily eliminate mental death. Time has a numbing effect on our feelings. With immortality our fear might become the numbing, the gradual mental death, a la Elena Makropulos. Our value systems might become informed by our gradual loss of feeling!
