Why Immortality Is Death
Western society is premised on seeking to satisfy desire. Life is striving and life is worthwhile. In Asian thought, Buddhism and Hinduism, desire is the enemy and must be conquered by elimination, not by satisfaction. The end goal can be said to be the same, that desire is no longer part of the equation – that is the premise of both Nirvana and Paradise. Immortality will, after a while, eliminate desire, because all that can be achieved and desired will have been lived. It is, however doubtful that life without desire can be sustained. The Germans say ‘Der Weg ist das Ziel’. Yet, if the road becomes endless it can no longer serve as a destination, and existence in the hither might become pointless.
