Abstract

Many people strive for self-improvement. Yet, perfection will never be achieved and that is good, because imperfection is part of the human condition. Hence, it can also be debated whether perfection is a relevant concept in a human context. The mosaic of strengths and weaknesses of humankind allows for complementarity, and therefore for great cumulative strength. Limits are an integral part of who we are, and without limits would we have substance? We may be defined by the Other, or by our understanding of how the Other understands us. And we may take responsibility for the Other. All this, however, does not make us the Other. We are still finite individuals, and, in an earthly context, the ideas of complete Oneness should scare us witless, because it would mean that we would lose ourselves. Limits have a laudable purpose.
