Abstract
In this chapter we succinctly map the philosophical antecedents of discourses on cosmopolitanism. We pay special attention to the Enlightenment thinkers, and their variations in conceptions of cosmopolitan ideals. Without aiming at a full historical reconstruction, we jump from the Enlightenment thinkers, who offered in our view a mapping of the major philosophical positions, over a few more recent stepping stones to a post-structuralist concept of cosmopolitanism which will inspire the further reasoning towards local cosmopolitanism and its embedding in evolving governance.
