Relevance of Osteomyelitis to Clinical Practice

  • Chapter
Osteomyelitis of the Foot and Ankle

Abstract

Osteomyelitis of the foot and ankle is a major public health problem. Despite advances in diagnosis and management, there is still a high prevalence of recurrent and chronic infections that can lead to devastating outcomes. Osteomyelitis is complicated by comorbidities such as diabetes. The foot and ankle surgeon needs to have a high clinical suspicion for osteomyelitis as well as an appropriate and timely treatment algorithm. Chronic states of bone infection in the lower extremity can lead to partial or complete amputation. The goal should be for early diagnosis, medical and surgical treatment where necessary, and limb salvage when possible. Due to the complex nature of this disease and its unique characteristics in the lower extremity, osteomyelitis remains a clinical challenge to the foot and ankle surgeon. This chapter introduces this difficult problem and discusses the current controversies in diagnosis and treatment.
