Abstract

The mechanisms of generation of internal waves in the stratified fluid are not exactly known and they are still a subject of observation and numerical modelling. Apart from the tides flowing over topography, the other driving force generating internal waves results are fluctuations of atmospheric pressure and sudden impact of stormy winds. Moreover, the bodies oscillating with frequency \(\omega \) in the stratified fluid, with buoyancy frequency \(N_0\), create a cross-shaped pattern of internal waves when \(\omega < N_0\). However, this generation mechanism is rather far from the geophysical flows discussed in this book, and it will not be considered here. A comprehensive information on the internal waves generated by solid oscillating bodies is given in a book by Sutherland, Internal gravity waves, p 377, 2010.
