Abstract

This chapter describes the development and present situation of drug laws in Poland, which, after the fall of the communist regime in 1989, became an important producing country of synthetic drugs and important transit country for smuggling heroin from Asia to Western Europe. Finally, at the end of the 1990s, the significance of the domestic market for heroin and amphetamine started to grow. In reaction, since the amendment of the 1997 Drug Abuse Counteraction Act in 2000, Polish drug law became one of the most restrictive in Europe. The chapter also describes the framework of medical treatment of drug-addicted offenders in Poland.
