Abstract
Paronychia is an inflammation of the proximal nail fold and periungual tissue. It is classified as either acute, which typically features a bacterial infection, or chronic, which usually features colonization by Candida albicans yeast. Chronic paronychia is a common occupational dermatitis, affecting individuals whose jobs involve wet work, such as household workers, hairdressers, kitchen staff, and healthcare workers. Treatment of paronychia depends on the subtype. Acute paronychia typically responds to treatment with warm water compresses and topical or oral antibiotics. Chronic paronychia responds well to treatment with potent topical corticosteroids, and additionally benefits from control of any exacerbating factors.
