Abstract
An increase in the number of postoperative surgical complications inevitably accompanies an increase in the rate of surgical intervention for a specific injury. This is especially true when the rate rises rapidly, there is little established information on the procedure itself, and a number of different surgical groups are involved: it could be argued that this is the case for the surgical fixation of rib fractures in polytrauma patients with flail chest injuries. Therefore, it is vital that in order to maximize patient outcome, meet the full potential benefits of chest wall stabilization, and minimize surgical morbidity, the operating surgeon must be able to recognize and manage postoperative complications. This chapter will focus specifically on this topic in order to provide the information that will allow the operating surgeon accomplish these goals.
