Abstract

Puberty should not be considered as a single event but rather a process in which the hypothalamic pituitary gonadal axis develops from the infantile stage to maturity. This is just one part of the continuum of reproductive function that begins during fetal life and ends in senescence. The age of puberty is, in large degree, determined by genetic factors as 50–80 % of pubertal timing is determined by genetic factors but environmental factors can alter this target. The increasing prevalence of obesity has been one factor postulated to decrease the age of menarche in recent years.
