Abstract

Disorders of the adrenal gland can lead to effects as disparate as abnormal sexual differentiation, decreased or increased growth velocity, and life-threatening endocrine emergencies. Diseases can arise from abnormalities within the adrenal gland itself, from abnormalities in the control of the adrenal gland, or from the ingestion of exogenous steroid compounds, even if these are prescribed for the appropriate treatment of diseases. This chapter does not discuss congenital adrenal hyperplasia which is found in Chap. 8.
