Paediatric Neuropsychological Formulation of a Traumatic Brain Injury with Special Reference to Culture

Abstract

This chapter presents a formulation following the serial assessment of a boy in the UK from a minority ethnic background. The boy experienced a traumatic brain injury (TBI) as a young child. Issues of plasticity and vulnerability are introduced as these are important considerations for estimating long-term prognosis in children surviving brain injury. The requirement to take cultural issues and socioeconomic status into consideration when interpreting test scores is also discussed. Finally, the case illustrates that intervention and support need to be culturally sensitive.
