Abstract
Palliative care is an essential component of cancer services. It is cheap and effective and can be provided across settings and teams. No patient should feel “abandoned” at the end of life, and control of distressing pain, symptoms and other concerns of patients and families should be goals of care. The successful delivery of palliative care requires an enabling policy environment, adequate access to drugs and education for all healthcare professionals to deliver basic generalist palliative care. Underpinning this must be research to ensure that the models of care are appropriate to health system contexts and cultural preferences.
