Abstract

This chapter addresses broaching cultural issues early in therapy by offering to conduct cultural assessments to incorporate clients’ cultural identities, worldview, acculturation levels, privilege, and oppressions into the counseling process by explicitly addressing social-cultural differences and accepting the differences by incorporating them into the counseling process. The chapter presents the process for conducting cultural assessments on cultural identity exploration, worldview, acculturation assessments is presented. It also addresses variables that facilitate cross-cultural encounters. The last part of the chapter presents case studies incorporating relevant cultural assessments before designing and implementing counseling interventions.
