Abstract
There are many causes of hair loss in men and women. It is important to understand the etiology of the hair loss in order to provide appropriate medical or surgical treatment. The evolution of hair transplant surgery has changed significantly over the years. The emphasis on the use of the follicular unit to achieve natural-appearing surgical results has shifted the trend of hair restoration from the historical use of large plug grafts, scalp flaps, and scalp reductions toward follicular unit grafting and follicular unit extraction. As with all procedures, it is important to understand the indications and potential complications associated with these procedures.
