Beauty and Body Dysmorphic Disorder

Abstract

Those who practice aesthetic medicine need to be familiar with body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) and be able to identify these patients during consultation. Unfortunately, diagnosis and therapy for those afflicted with BDD can be quite difficult for the dermatologist, plastic surgeon, or other physician or health care provider. For slight abnormalities, it may be very difficult to decide whether the preoccupation is disproportionate. In addition, once suspected, most will be hesitant to accept the diagnosis along with appropriate referral. This chapter offers tips, approach tactics, and resources to help those caring for patients with BDD.
