Abstract
The measurement of the angular distribution of molecules desorbing from single crystal surfaces provides information on the dynamics of the desorption process. For desorption from completely equilibrated surface species, a cosine distribution is expected. However, often a noncosine distribution is observed, and this may be related to processes such as atom recombination at a point on a repulsive adsorbate-surface potential energy curve in the region of the transition state. A simple apparatus to measure the angular distribution is shown in Fig. 25.1a (Steinruck et al. in Surface Science 152/153:323, [1]).
