An Overview of Hydrology and Water Supply

  • Chapter

Abstract

An overview of the hydrological cycle, how this cycle is influenced by local conditions, and the distribution of water within the hydrosphere is presented. Water quality investigations often require an assessment of water quantity. This is because studies of water quality may necessitate information on amounts of dissolved or particulate substances added to or discharged from aquatic systems as a result of inflowing or outflowing water of natural or anthropogenic origin (pollution). A discussion of simple water velocity and volume measurements and their use in the preparation of water budgets is included.
