Valuation of Coastal and Marine Ecosystem Services: A Literature Review

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Studies in Ecological Economics ((SEEC,volume 9))

Abstract

Valuation is one of the tools of the Decision Support System and aims to support the economic (and social) appraisal and valuation of options component in the adaptive coastal management approach. This chapter assesses the availability of primary valuation studies providing economic value estimates for those ecosystem ‘goods and benefits’ generated from coastal and marine ecosystems. The overview reveals considerable gaps in the literature with respect to primary (monetary) valuation studies addressing coastal and marine habitats and specific ecosystem services, globally and in particular for the UK.

Notes

  1. 1.

Tropical coral reefs and mangroves are of little importance to GB and therefore not included in Table 6.2.

  2. 2.

Recreational extraction of food and other products are included in the tourism category.
