Abstract
Congenital femoral deficiency (CFD), also known as proximal femoral focal deficiency, is a rare birth defect that can affect the hip, femur, and knee. The spectrum of deformity can range from mild shortening to a proximal or distal deficiency, or even complete absence of the femur. This chapter is a comprehensive review of CFD, including the history, pathology, classification, and treatment of CFD. Genetics, embryology, and pathophysiology are reviewed. The anatomy and deformity are discussed, including a review of multiple classification schemes and a history of previous treatment. This chapter also includes a guide to diagnosing, examining, and developing a treatment plan for CFD, based on the modern Paley classification scheme. Detailed surgical technique includes the indications, complications, and techniques of limb lengthening in CFD, as well as a historical perspective and stepwise technique for the Superhip and Superknee procedures as developed by the author.
