Building Exporting Capabilities: Korea’s Emergence as a Marketing Power

  • Conference paper
Proceedings of the 1989 Academy of Marketing Science (AMS) Annual Conference

Abstract

South Korea has evolved into a world marketing powerhouse during the past twenty five years. The country has been able to develop its exporting capabilities by inducing comparative advantages in certain key sectors such as textiles, apparels, consumer electronics and automobiles. This paper discusses how the Koreans have mounted an orchestrated and systematic effort to reach international markets. Industry and government collaborated to set exporting targets, monitor export performance and identify new sectors appropriate for future export penetration. Their national drive for exporting success has paid off. Developing countries can learn much from the Korean experience.
