Abstract
This study examines the characteristics of 1000 Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) of America's top corporations, in order to provide factual information marketing educators may disseminate to students considering careers in marketing. Six research questions related to CEO career path, promotion speed, salary, educational level, and educational relevance are examined. Marketing remains a top path to CEO status although the time required to reach the top can take longer than other career paths. Marketing CEOs occupy positions across all eight industrial categories examined and receive an average $776,000 salary per year. Marketing CEOs have earned a low percentage of undergraduate marketing degrees and MBAs. Implications for marketing educators and suggestions for future research are also discussed.
