Abstract

Exploration, production, development, and decommissioning activity trends and correlations in the shallow water and deepwater of US Gulf of Mexico OCS are evaluated over the period 2000–2013. Drilling is the only way to test prospects for the presence of hydrocarbons and, if commercial accumulations exist, will create the need for additional infrastructure to deliver, process, and transport the product to the market. Production requires wells, structures, and pipelines to transfer fluids from reservoir sands to processing facilities and onward to the shore, and the requirements depend upon the size and areal extent of the reservoir and the presence of existing infrastructure and its available capacity. After reservoirs are depleted and infrastructure is no longer useful, wells are abandoned and structures and pipelines are decommissioned.
