Abstract

Cysts of the jaws are classified in distinct categories depending on histogenesis and etiology. When derived from odontogenic epithelium, they are called odontogenic whereas those that have their source in other epithelial structures are known as non-odontogenic. Odontogenic cysts can be further classified as inflammatory and developmental. In this Chapter, the histology of these lesions is described and illustrated. For the purpose of completeness, cavities in the jaws that lack an epithelial investment are also discussed. Special emphasis is put on the distinction between cysts and cystic neoplasms.
