Abstract
Occupational therapy (OT) is the art and science of daily living. “Occupation” refers to any purposeful daily activity for which an individual holds meaning and value. Occupational therapy practitioners work with people of all ages and any diagnostic presentation to promote optimal independence in daily activities and a satisfying quality of life. Many people receiving occupational therapy services have complaints of pain. This chapter is an overview of OT’s unique approach to working with individuals who have acute or chronic pain. It defines occupational therapy, emphasizes holistic, individualized evaluation and treatment, encourages a multidisciplinary team approach, and emphasizes the importance of a working partnership with each client. Areas of evaluation and potential treatment techniques are described, and the chapter concludes with several case studies. The overall theme is to combine direct treatment for pain reduction with skill development in pain management for the most effective impact on daily function.
