Chronic Kidney Disease: Balancing Nutritional Needs with Nutrition Prevention of Kidney Stones

Abstract

Many patients with kidney stones also have comorbidities that require nutritional management. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a fairly common comorbidity and is associated with multiple dietary recommendations, depending on the severity of kidney dysfunction. The nutritional management of patients with CKD is complex and depends on the stage of CKD and other patient-specific factors. The nutritional management of patients at risk for kidney stone recurrence is also driven by patient-specific factors as well as factors related to the type(s) of stones they form and underlying medical contributors. The purpose of this chapter is to outline the general nutritional management concepts related to CKD, describe their rationale, identify specific nutrients of interest and concern, and, finally, offer a perspective on how to integrate stone prevention dietary recommendations with dietary recommendations for CKD.
