Abstract

One of the most important therapies for an adult with cystic fibrosis (CF) is to maintain optimal nutrition. This chapter reviews the nutritional challenges of adults with CF and discusses the importance of nutrition therapy to achieve improved longevity. Dietitians have a very important role in guiding adults living with this disease to better meet their nutritional goals. The following CF topics are discussed as they relate to the adult patient: diet, clinical assessment, pancreatic status, vitamin and mineral supplementation, bone health, and diabetes. The primary nutrition goal of the CF medical team should be the prevention of malnutrition at all ages, including adults.
