Abstract

In the previous chapter, the linearization and adjoint approaches were applied to analytic models, and the obtained results matched those obtained in Chap. 4 using methods of differential calculusĀ and variational calculus. This provided, albeit not rigorous but hopefully still convincing validation of general formulations of the linearization and adjoint approaches formulated in Chap. 3. In this chapter, the linearization and adjoint approaches of sensitivity analysis will be applied to selected numerical models for which analytic solutions are not available.

  • Sensitivity analysis of the model of radiances of a scattering planetary atmosphere in thermal spectral region was done in a number of the authorā€™s papers. The analysis in the form presented in this chapter was developed in (Ustinov 2001a) and (Ustinov 2002). The adjoint approach to sensitivity analysis of the zero-dimensional model of atmospheric dynamics was developed in (Ustinov 2001b) and is presented in this book in a slightly modified form. The linearized sensitivity analysis of the model of orbital tracking data of the planetary orbiter spacecraft is published in (Moyer 2000), and application of the adjoint approach to sensitivity analysis of this model was presented in (Ustinov and Sunseri 2005).
