Ultrasound-Guided Interventional Maneuvers

  • Chapter
  • First Online:

Abstract

Musculoskeletal ultrasound (MSUS)-guided interventional maneuvers are an important aspect of our clinical practice. The continuously increasing interest in performing this kind of interventions is based on several advantages of the MSUS: substantial cost reduction (availability, applicability to the outpatients, immediate intervention possibility), higher accuracy in effusion aspiration and drug deposition with subsequent better efficacy and outcome. These advantages are doubled by a very good safety profile and reduction of incidental damage to adjacent neurovascular structures and other procedure-related complications. Indeed, the possibility to visualize the needle penetration in deep, complex, or postsurgical modified anatomical areas, tiny spaces as tendon sheaths, confers superiority in comparison to blind interventional maneuvers. This chapter provides information about the basic techniques of the MSUS-guided joints and periarticular structures aspiration, injections as well as biopsy together with an update of the therapeutic standards, indications/contraindications, efficacy, and safety profile of the methods.
